South Africa  - Victoria Falls - Zambia

Guests will be transferred to O R Tambo International in Johannesburg for a flight to the town of Victoria Falls, named after the majestic falls near which it is located.

The Victoria Falls is without a doubt one of the most spectacular natural sights in the entire world. The falls occur where the mighty Zambezi River stretches to approximately 1 688m wide and, from its highest point, plummets 108m meters in a thundering roar of white waters and spiraling mists. This occurrence has earned it the local name of "Mosi-oa-Tunya" - the smoke that thunders.

Time devoted to a Victoria Falls tour is followed by a visit to the Victoria Falls Craft Market, where some of Africa's finest artwork is on display. Guests will then be assisted with check-in at the elegant Royal Livingstone hotel.

The morning is devoted to an elephant-back safari in a wilderness area not far from Victoria Falls. An experienced elephant minder accompanies each elephant and visitor. Upon mounting the elephants, the safari begins. View wildlife from the back of the elephant and savor the experience of crashing through the African bush atop a gigantic pachyderm. Your safari ends with a short training session and interaction with the elephants, followed by a late breakfast or early lunch.

Guests then return to the hotel, where they are met during the late afternoon for a sunset cruise on the mighty Zambezi River. View game coming to the water's edge for a late afternoon drink, whilst the setting sun creates a splendid display of color over one of Africa's finest wilderness areas.

We leave the Victoria Falls behind as we fly Mfuwe Airport; a small and charming airport unlike any you've ever experienced. Mfuwe must be one of the world's smallest – and most relaxed – international airports.

The transfer to your Luangwa safari lodge from Mfuwe Airport to Mfuwe Lodge takes about 45-mins. Ease yourself into Luangwa life with a stay at the award winning Mfuwe Lodge. Set inside the park, just five minutes’ drive from the main gate, the lodge’s allure is instantly obvious. Beneath a canopy of ebony and mahogany, its thatched buildings are arranged around the banks of two lagoons where an endless stream of wildlife will keep you enthralled as you lounge on the open deck or take a dip in the swimming pool. Thanks to a thorough refurbishment in 2010 the airy interior of the lodge is an exquisite complement to its natural surroundings.

This region of the park is renowned for its prolific game – giraffe, buffalo, antelope, crocodile are constant visitors to Mfuwe Lodge’s lagoon, whilst in November the local elephants regularly wander right through the lobby, lured by a nearby wild mango tree. Whether you stay overnight, or just have lunch en route to a bushcamp, Mfuwe Lodge’s relaxed charm and enviable surroundings make it the perfect stopover. Voted Best Lodge in Zambia in 2009 Mfuwe Lodge also offers you the chance to relax at its Bush-Spa or buy a few momentos of your time in Zambia at our curio shop.

Daily activities include a dawn-patrol game drive through the South Luangwa National Park with excellent game viewing, birding and unspoilt wilderness; lunches by the river's edge are followed by afternoon tea and a second game drive that extends into the night returning by way of spotlight-illuminated nocturnal creatures.
